Baptisms

Baptism is a ceremony of welcome, thanksgiving and belonging to the church. It celebrates the gift of life and of God’s love made known in Jesus.

At St Mark’s, Baptism normally takes place as part of one of the regular Sunday services. At least one month’s notice is normally required.

Each candidate for Baptism is sponsored by one or more persons. Such sponsor(s) or Godparents, may be the parents themselves and/or others close to the family. Sponsors need to be baptised Christians and, if the candidate is a child, able to sincerely make declarations of faith and commitment on behalf of the candidate.

Sponsors are welcome to obtain a Bapismal candle prior to the day – it is lit and presented to the baptised (or sponsor) as part of the service. It should be large enough that it can stand by itself.

There are no fees for baptisms. Baptismal families are welcome to make a voluntary thank-offering of say $200 to mark the special occasion.
